These mashed sweet potatoes are a delicious sweet and savory side dish! Perfect for the holidays, they're easy to make with 7 simple ingredients.

Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 5 large or 6 medium, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (cut into pats, plus more for serving)
  • ½ cup milk (warmed)
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (plus more for cooking the potatoes)
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • fresh thyme leaves (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Place the sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water by 1 inch. Stir 1 tablespoon salt into the water.
  2. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to maintain a gentle boil. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain the potatoes and return to the pot. Add the butter, milk, maple syrup, salt, and several grinds of pepper. Use a potato masher to mash until smooth and well combined.
  4. Season to taste and serve topped with more butter and fresh thyme leaves, if desired.

Notes

  • These mashed sweet potatoes keep well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat them in the microwave or in a covered baking dish in a 350°F oven.
  • To freeze mashed sweet potatoes, allow them to cool to room temperature. Then, seal them in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Allow them to thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating in the microwave or oven.
